Water...I need water!
We played our first game of the season on Sunday in the Capital Curling League and I have to admit I wasn't prepared for the amount of stiffness my body was about to endure.
I did not get the chance to practice beforehand (mistake #1) and didn't bother with the 'fun-spiel' for the fear of getting on a team with some dickhead (mistake #2) but I thought that my 30 minute a day walking would get me by.
After three ends things seemed on track but I started to falter badly. My knees were giving out and I was sweeping the stones too hard and racing for the water bottle too often. It didn't help that second Darren Pellerin was unavailable due to his 'car breaking down'.
Our opponents were the Paul Hunt Jr. foursome whom we defeated in last year's third place play-off match. We were happy to face a contending team off the bat and though it was just Phil, Peter and myself, we still felt a win was possible.
Steals of one and two put us up 3-0 and we held them to a single in three but disaster struck in four as we gave up a steal of three. Curling's a funny game like that, you can be on cruise control one moment and then find yourself having to come from behind.
Peter made a nice draw for two in the fifth end to put us back up 5-4 and we held Hunt to just a single in six. We controlled the early stages of end seven and had a rock in the back eight-foot and a guard to the left near the top of the twelve-foot but their mate got lucky and got a piece of the guard and re-directed the rock on to the one in the paint. We evantually had to settle for one and a 6-5 lead heading home.
By this time I had consumed almost two full bottles of water and I was waiting for it to be over. Phil was looking forward to meeting his groupies and Peter was as cool as a cucumber. I was still giving 100% mind you but an 80 year-old would have beaten me in a foot race at that point in time.
To make a long story short, we missed most of our shots in that final end and they got three to win 8-6 but the positives far outweighed the negatives. We seem to perform well as underdogs and I can see us surprising some teams once again.
When I woke up Monday, I had to literally roll out of the bed, my legs, back and shoulders were that stiff, but it vanished quicker than Don Johnson's singing career.
And what did I want to drink when the game was over...water of course!
