And that's a wrap!
The 2005/06 curling season is officially in the books and we finished up on a high note with a 6-0 pasting of Gary Welsh on Sunday. The match lasted just four ends and to be truthful I didn't mind as part of me wanted it to be done and over with.
I've been practicing my golf game for a couple weeks now and I can hardly wait to get on the fairway. There was the business of a curling game, however, and I thought we handled the situation as well as we possibly could.
Playing for pride it would have been easy to just go through the motions but we were on top of our game from the first rock. We took two in the first and stole singles in the second and third ends. The steal in two coming off a 'lucky' shot from Peter Boudreau.
He tried to angle Welsh's blue rock on to the two rocks that were near the button but he was inside his intended target and angled his own rock off the stone closest to the button and put us shot. We had the lucky horseshoe there and Welsh had no chance at a point.
The end came in the fourth when Welsh was light on a draw with two Cadien stones in the eight foot. It was our first ever shutout and ended our campaign with a 10-11-1 record.
The Twin Cities saw us go 1-3 but it didn't reflect how well we played. I thought for 3 of the 4 games we held our own and but for a couple of tough breaks as well as excellent shot making from the opposition we might have gone farther but curling can be a cruel game sometime.
It was funny how we ended up facing Jared Newcombe in our final match because we played them two years ago in the Twin Cities and upset them 7-5. They are a super league team here at CFB and the boys had only been together for a couple of months and I still had the hideous chicken leg delivery.
We were tied 2-2 after four ends but a mistake in the fifth gave them two and though we battled hard, Newcombe came out on top 6-3. It was a confidence booster, despite the loss, and we carried that into our final three games which we won.
Having a quick look at the statistics, we were 7-14 on January 15 but went 15-15-1 the rest of the way to finish 22-29-1. We were 9-13-0 on Thursday and 3-5 in bonspiels to go with our 10-11-1 record on Sunday.
I felt the record was misleading as we should have been five or six games better but we let some leads slip away in the late stages. Perhaps the biggest factor in our season was the inability to take advantage of having last rock.
We had the hammer for 177 ends and managed two or more points just 47 times which is an efficiency percentage of 26. The normal percentage should be around 35 to 40. If we can even get the percentage in the 30s then we will rise up the table.
But our efforts in the two bonspiels was much improved. We seemed to show too much respect a year ago and that backfired. It was a complete 180 degree turn this time as we came so close to making the last four at the Gold Star and then the Twin Cities gave us more optimism for 2006/07.
We'll take some time off and figure out what our plans are. The other three guys may have school commitments which would force us to change the schedule around. Whatever happens if we can fire on all cylinders next year then we can go from being a decent team to an excellent one.
Cheers,
Terry
